Courtroom A of the Calcasieu Parish Courthouse in Lake Charles was filled with a standing room only crowd of approximately 450 people for the Road Home property auction Saturday, September 25. There were 355 registered bidders helping to generate over $1.2 million.
This is the second auction to take place in the western region of the State of Louisiana. Previously, Louisiana Land Trust auctioned approximately 60 Road Home properties in Vermilion, Acadia, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry and St. Martin parishes. In addition to all auctioned properties, 35 parcels are being sold to individuals who live next door to Road Home properties through various parishes Lot Next Door program.
“We are very excited about helping our citizens continue to recover from Hurricanes Rita and Katrina”, said Michael Taylor, executive director, Louisiana Land Trust. “With these auctions, we now have a total of 196 Road Home properties destroyed by Hurricane Rita back into commerce. This is fulfilling our ultimate goal in the recovery process.”
The bidding was open to the public with a registration requirement.This auction, with closings to take place within 30 days after all LLT Conditions to Closing of the agreement are met, places all 100 properties back into commerce and generates Community Development Block funding for each parish.

Beauregard – $56,000
Jefferson Davis – $108,000

The Road Home Property auction in Abbeville on Saturday generated $207,000 in sales of 32 properties.

Nearly 250 people including 126 registered bidders gathered at A.A. Comeaux Park Recreation Center to watch and take part in the property auction.

The Louisiana Land Trust was intrusted to sell the lots acquired through the Road Home Program that was created in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.

The money generated from property sales will go to the Police Jury to be used for Community Development Block Grant projects.

The Louisiana Land Trust hired Gilmore Auction and Realty Company to help with the auction.

“Everything sold,” said David Gilmore, owner of Gilmore Auction and Realty Co.. “We had good bidders.”

The land, as large as 10 acres to lots as small as 65 by 143 sold. Homes can be built on the properties but they must be built according to flood codes.

Gilmore said there was not one piece of property that was a hot item.

Vermilion Parish had the most properties at the auction with 32.

Iberia Parish had six properties that sold for a total of $41,000.

St. Landry had four properties that went for $9,000.

St. Martin had three properties that sold for $21,000.

Acadia Parish had two properties that sold for $6,000.

The total amount generated in sales that day was $296,500.

An auction Saturday attracted 248 bidders and raised nearly $2 million in funds that will be converted to block grant money. The properties in St. Tammany, Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes were sold to the state by homeowners who didn’t want to rebuild or repair them after Hurricane Katrina.

The Louisiana Land Trust says it has secured and maintained more than 10,000 properties since the storm.

Pabst Brewing building and other properties sold in Crossroads area

The former Pabst Brewing Co. building at 2107 Central St. and nine other Crossroads-area buildings owned by the late Tom Levitt have been sold at auction.

The 90,600-square-foot Pabst building along with the adjoining former Pendergast Wholesale Liquor Co. building at 2301 Central sold for about $1.1 million, according to Gib Kerr, the broker at Sperry Van Ness who helped handle the transaction.

Kerr said the Pabst building was the only one of the larger buildings in the Levitt estate portfolio that sold at the auction, which drew about 24 bidders. The nine other properties that sold ranged from a 31-space parking lot to a 14,700-square-foot building at 2030 Central.

“Most bidding has more to do with the smaller buildings for owner-occupants,” he said. “The larger properties of interest to developers didn’t get much play.”

Levitt, who died in September, owned a variety of properties in the Freight House District.

The Pabst and Pendergast buildings were particularly attractive to buyers because the city has approved a $17.8 million redevelopment plan for the properties that includes $3.9 million in tax increment financing assistance.

Three large buildings not sold at the auction were the Candle building, 2101 Broadway; Columbia building, 2006-2014 Wyandotte St; and Creamery building, 2100 Central.

Also known as Mahogany Manor, the house was built for Henry Raziano, a wealthy local businessman, and his wife Amelia.  The Raziano House is a large three-story brick residence in the Colonial Revival style and is on the National Register of Historic Places.  It is locally significant in the area of architecture because it is a landmark within the Jefferson Parish community of Kenner.  It achieves this distinction because of its size and its status as one of the town’s most pretentious buildings.
